~ Martingale Collars for Dogs ~

Martingale collars are suitable for all medium & large dog breeds.  They are particularly good for sighthound breeds (greyhounds, whippets, lurchers etc) as their heads are relatively small compared to the width of their long necks.

The martingale collar will sit comfortably loose around the base of the dog's neck in the open position when he/she is not pulling. A martingale collar is only tight when it needs to be tight, making it ideal for prolonged indoor wear. This contrasts with standard buckle collars which have to be worn tight enough to prevent the dog's head from slipping through  when pulled - implying that they need to be always tightly fastened.

They are similar in concept to a horse's martingale.  The collar is made from two loops which draw together tightly around the dog's neck just under the chin when he/she pulls on the lead. This prevents the dog from backing out of the collar. Safer and more humane than a choke chain, a properly fitted martingale collar will only tighten to a certain point and will not choke or distress the dog.

The large loop is placed around the dog's neck and adjusted so that it fits snugly just behind the ears, with the two large D-rings touching. The lead is clipped onto the single D-ring on the smaller loop. Tension on the lead pulls the small loop taut, which in turn draws the two sides of the larger loop together into the closed position, to prevent escape. The two large D-rings act as a 'stop', so the collar will not tighten beyond this point.
