Northern Greyhound Rescue www.northerngreyhoundrescue.org.uk

NGR is a small voluntary group in the North West / Lancashire area dedicated to improving the lives of Greyhounds and Lurchers.  The dogs come from both licensed tracks, unregulated or 'flapping tracks'.  They may also be stray hounds or dogs who can no longer stay in their present homes. The dogs are then housed in either foster homes or private boarding kennels until loving new homes can be found for them. Costs are covered personally and through fundraising and donations. Volunteers are always needed and welcomed.

Wimbledon Greyhound Welfare www.hershamhounds.org

WGW homes retired greyhounds who are handed over by trainers, on behalf of owners, with the express intension of finding them good retirement homes.  They have kennels in Hersham, Surrey that care for 80+ greyhounds at any one time, the majority of whom are for homing.  In August 2008 they also opened The Sanctuary to provide a special home for long term residents.

Erin Hounds www.erinhounds.co.uk

Erin Hounds is a Cheshire-based group set up to help abandoned and neglected Sighthounds in Ireland.  Ireland has many problematic issues with companion animal welfare.  As a result of uncontrolled overbreeding and irresponsible dog ownership, thousands of unwanted young, healthy dogs are destroyed every year.  The only hope for these dogs is to be rescued by one of the splendid rehoming groups in Ireland or a rescue group in another European county with a better animal welfare record.  Erin Hounds focuses on Sighthounds, and predominantly Lurchers - who have a particularly hard time in Ireland, for reasons that are too complex to mention here.  Many of these dogs are bred in an attempt to obtain 'the one' to be sold commercially at great profit - the remaining are cast off.  As Ireland breeds more dogs than could ever be homed the only future for these dogs is outside of the country, and Erin Hounds strive to find suitable homes for some of them in Great Britain.

The Hound Lounge www.thehoundlounge.co.uk

The Hound Lounge is an online forum for people to chat about their hounds.  There is also a fundraising element, with competitions, auctions, and merchandise to raise funds for rescues, charities and other organisations.

Retired Greyhound Trust www.retiredgreyhounds.co.uk

The Retired Greyhound Trust (RGT) is a national charity dedicated to finding homes for greyhounds at the end of their racing careers.  It was set up in 1975 and since then has re-homed almost 40,000 greyhounds.  There are 70 branches of the Trust based right across the UK, from the Isle of Skye to Jersey. The RGT:
  • Find homes for as many retired greyhounds as possible.
  • Place some retired greyhounds in approved kennels.
  • Seek out new people willing to give a retired greyhound a home and check that they are suitable.
  • Ensure that dogs placed in homes are healthy.
  • Highlight to the greyhound racing industry the importance of providing a good life for retired greyhounds.
  • Raise money to support its work.
Greyhound Gap www.greyhoundgap.org.uk

Each year hundreds of healthy greyhounds & lurchers are needlessly put to sleep in the UK and this figure is repeated throughout many countries in the world!  The lucky ones make it into rescue, however the story doesn't end there.  There are many rescues the length and breadth of the country looking for homes. There are also many potential adopters looking for the right dog to join their family. There is a "gap" between these two parties in terms of distance, the need for homechecking, transporting the dog or quite simply even knowing that each other exists!  This is where Greyhound Gap comes in. The whole aim of this site is to fill that gap by assisting rescues and new potential adopters in their quest to find the perfect home for the perfect dog. The more the rescues can home, the more lucky ones they can make way for.

Orchard Greyhound Sanctuary www.orchardgreyhoundsanctuary.com

The Orchard Greyhound Sanctuary is a small privately-run refuge for rescued and retired greyhounds.  Located in Southwest County Offaly in the midst of farming country, greyhounds are socialised in a home environment and are far removed from kennel life.  They learn their names and household manners, get housebroken and socialised, and in general run free on almost 3 enclosed acres.  Prospective owners are invited to come and visit and stay to get to know the dogs.  Great care is given to try to match up the right dog with the right home.  The sanctuary both specialises in caring for sighhounds of all kinds that are found in very poor condition, as well as greyhounds which arrive with and without health and behavioural problems.  Earmarked greyhounds are supported by the Irish Greyound Board (Bord na gCon).  Unmarked greyhounds and all other types of sighthounds are supported by donations.

Chaldon Animal Sanctuary www.chaldonanimalsanctuary.co.uk

The Chaldon Animal Sanctuary in Surrey is not sighthound specific, but cares for many animals of all shapes and sizes.  They have upwards of 150 animals in their care – all of which will live out their days with the love and devotion provided at the sanctuary. Many of these animals are unhomeable because of behavioural problems; some have come because their owners have moved into sheltered accommodation and they are unable to take their pets with them.  The sanctuary is not a rescue or a rehoming centre. They provide life-long care for animals that have been abused, neglected, mistreated, or rescued from cruel situations.  They are non-breeding, and non-profit making and depend on the goodwill of the general public who raise funds in various ingenious ways. Used postage stamps, bric-a-brac, towels, blankets are always welcome.
